Paving the Way for Korea's Creative Ballet

As the National Theater of Korea moved from Myeong-dong to Jangchung-dong in 1974, the Korea National Ballet was separated from the National Dance Company of Korea, performing more actively. The Company then performed its first full-length works and had its first choreographer. For example, it performed <The Dream of Jigwi> based on a Korean legend in 1974, <Giselle> in 1975, <Coppélia> in 1976 and <Swan Lake> and <The Nutcracker> in 1977 to lay the foundation for the development of the Korean ballet. In the 1980's, while Koreans became more interested in the performing arts and Korea organized the National Dance Festival, the 1986 Asian Games and the 1988 Seoul Olympics, the Company continued to pave the way for the creation of Korean ballets such as <Cheoyong>(1981), <Baebijang>(1984) and <Chunhyang's Love>(1986).

Soon afterward, as in many of the developed countries, the Company came to have both official and intern dancers. In 1997, it first started its overseas performances in Egypt and Israel (from June 30 to July 12). The major works performed by the Company were <Swan Lake>, <The Nutcracker> and <Carmina Burana>.

Becoming the Center of the Rapid Development of the Korean Ballet

Since Choi Tae-ji was designated as the Company's third artistic Director, the Company has become the center of the rapid development of the Korean ballet. In particular, the Company adopted the "star marketing" strategy and Korea's first "ballet accompanied with commentaries" to take the lead in popularizing ballet. Meanwhile, many of Korean ballets were introduced abroad. The Company, which started its overseas performances in Egypt and Israel in 1991, has continued to perform around the world in the 2000's, including Japan and China.

Creative Ballets and Scientific Marketing

By creating ballets and adopting scientific marketing strategies, the Company's performances in the United States and Russia in 2003 were praised by the local experts and media. Moreover, in 2007, the Company performed <Spartacus> with Russia's Novosibirsk Ballet Company and was invited to the International Ballet Festival in Lodz, Poland with <Swan Lake>, moving forward to achieve its goal of becoming one of the best ballet companies in the world. In 2005, it won the 37th National Arts and Culture Prize awarded by the president of Korea. Furthermore, many of the Company's dancers have won international competitions and in September and October 2010, it will perform with Russia's Bolshoi Ballet for the first time in its history. The Company, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2012, is making efforts to "popularize" ballet with its "Ballet Story" and "Public Service Program" on the domestic front while "globalizing" itself by actively cooperating with the world's best choreographers and enhancing its global status on the international front.
