Young Raymonda, the niece of the Countess Sybilla de Doris, a French noblewoman, is Jean de Brienne’s fiancée.
Jean de Brienne arrives to the castle. He has come to bid farewell to his fiancée, Raymonda before leaving to go on the Crusades led by Andrew II, the King of Hungary. Raymonda says goodbye to her beloved and the knight leaves the castle. In the evening, Raymonda, surrounded by her friends, plays the harp and dreams of her beloved.
Night-time. Raymonda is alone and falls asleep. In her dream, Raymonda appears in a fantasy world and sees Jean de Brienne surrounded by beautiful Graces. The happy couple gets together, but suddenly Jean de Brienne disappears. In the Brienne’s place, Raymonda finds an unknown knight from east, who says he is passionately in love with her. Raymonda is frightened and faints on the ground. As the scene disappears Raymonda wakes up.
Dawn breaks. Raymonda believes that the apparition that she saw in her dream is an ominous sign that will happen in the future.
