“dov’e la luna” mans “where is the moon?” just like the title implies, this performance has a very romantic story behind it. the choreographer jean-christophe maillot was traveling the mediterranean with princess caroline of monaco, the chairperson of the board of directors of his ballet company. they were on the deck of a ship and the night was pitching black. princess caroline looked up into the sky and asked, “where is the moon?” and at that moment, maillot was inspired for this ballet.
seven dancers solemnly search for the shadows and light hidden in the body. as the choreographer’s reputation for jolting the boundaries of classical ballet shows, this performance is presented in monochrome through the contrast of light and dark. in mythology, the moon represents the road between life and death, and symbolizes the path to rebirth. similarly, there is no beginning or end in this ballet, only endless movements. the choreographer alludes that transience is the only eternal state of being.
