Korean's Best
Ballet Company Boasting Its Long History

The Korean National Ballet (Artistic Director: Choi Tae-ji), Korean's oldest ballet company which was established by the government in 1962, has greatly contributed to the development of the Korean ballet. The Company's open auditions which take place several times a year have allowed it to choose the country's best 70 dancers who annually perform about 30 works over 100 times. It has performed in other countries such as Russia, France, the United States, Japan and Luxembourg since 1997, enhancing the Korean ballet's global status. Its dancers have also played leading roles in world-renowned ballet companies like the Ballet de l'Opéra national de Paris, proving that the Korean ballet is now recognized by the world. The Company also drew public attention by performing Rudolf Nureyev's full-length version of Sleeping Beauty in 2004 for the first time in Korean.

The Academy affiliated with the Korean National Ballet has prepared a systematic educational program to teach practical technique based on professional dancers’ experiences and their knowledge. Thanks to this, the academy has played an important role in discovering hidden talents and nurturing them. Moreover, it has been possible to develop an infrastructure to nurture professional dancers from amateurs. In fact, most of the principal dancers of the Korean National Ballet were educated by the academy.
