a new interpretation of “cinderella” with attractive costumes and fantastic stage
the ballets of jean-christophe maillot, one of whose works was “romeo and juliet,” which the first performance was presented in korea in 2000, have fascinated audiences with new and unique interpretations on the classical ballet works. prokofiev said cinderella is not only a character in a fairy tale but a living being who lives her life and has feelings and we are touched by her destiny. in order to unveil this great fairy tale which is familiar but, at the same time, unfamiliar to us, jean-christophe maillot presents natural and supernatural elements by following an example of human nature in this work. guided by the memory of her mother, cinderella creates her own path in order to search for truth and love in the artificiality of the sophisticated and attractive castle. jean-christophe maillot’s version of “cinderella” does not put us through a guided reading but seems to give the characters the autonomy to live in their story and audiences the freedom to interpret it as they see fit.
