raymonda is the best work of aleksandr glazunov’s, a russian composer. the story, which takes place in the age of knights and chivalry, is based on a medieval legend about the rivalry between the noble knight, jean de brienne, and the perfidious saracen sheikh, abderakhman, for the love of the young raymonda. the dramatic conflict, which gives us a lesson that faithfulness, nobility, beauty, and elevated love win the day, is embodied in glazunov’s music. remarkable significance in the ballet score are the suites for the choreography, characterizing raymonda’s poetic disposition and the fantastic kingdom in her reveries, abderakhman’s exotic entourage, and the magnificence of the court festivities. the suites consist of sequences of different dances, linked with movements of the main characters.
